The Death Penalty vs. Life In Prison

The death penalty doesn't detour crime no matter how much someone tries to tell you otherwise, and I haven't found any information stating otherwise in all of the research I've done for my essay. People are still going to commit crimes, and even if they are sentenced with the death penalty a lot of them do not have any remorse for whatever they did. The death penalty costs a lot more than just having someone sit in jail for a life sentence. When you're sentenced with the death penalty you have to pay for lawyers, prosecutors, defense attorney's and those expenses can add up. There's also the chance that someone that gets executed can later be proven innocent, so then you've basically just killed someone that should still be living their life. Giving someone a life sentence instead of the death penalty can provide justice to the survivors of murder victims. It can also help bring more resources to be invested in helping solve other murder cases.

Types of Capital Punishment

There are multiple different ways someone can be killed from the death penalty including lethal injection, electrocution, gas chamber, hanging, and the firing squad. Most aren't used in today's society anymore and the only ones I've heard of being used in the past fifty years are lethal injections and electrocution. If you are given the death penalty and they were to give you a lethal injection to kill you, you could be dead within five minutes or even up to two hours. You could be dealing with that excruciating pain until you're not alive anymore. That's no way to die. Even with the electric chair, it's said it could take two minutes or even up to more than fifteen minutes. That's so excruciating as well, and it sounds so painful to have to go through.
